highway 1 Closure Travel Updates

You heard it right! As of January 14, 2026, California Highway 1 is wide open!

Following a very long three-year long closure, you can now travel unimpeded from Monterey through Carmel, Big Sur, Ragged Point, Cambria, Cayucos, and Morro Bay — all the way to San Luis Obispo—and experience one of the most beautiful scenic drives in the world!

Highway 1 is still a curvy, moody old highway, prone to lane restrictions and total closures. We do recommend visiting the CalTrans website at https://roads.dot.ca.gov/ to check road conditions when planning your trip and before starting out on the morning of your stay—just in case.
