highway 1 Closure Travel Updates

Highway 1 is open in both directions, following a brief storm-related closure that lasted from February 17 to February 20, 2026 at 4PM. We are delighted to once again be able to greet friends from both the North and the South!

Highway 1 is still a curvy, moody old highway, prone to lane restrictions and total closures. We do recommend visiting the CalTrans website at https://roads.dot.ca.gov/ to check road conditions when planning your trip and before starting out on the morning of your stay—just in case. You heard it right! As of January 14, 2026, California Highway 1 is wide open!

Following a very long three-year long closure, you can now travel unimpeded from Monterey through Carmel, Big Sur, Ragged Point, Cambria, Cayucos, and Morro Bay — all the way to San Luis Obispo—and experience one of the most beautiful scenic drives in the world!
